“Two actions happened in the past, one happened earlier than the other. 兩件事件也在過去發生。/但是但是一件事比另一件事更早發生。”

Past perfect on the first action 第一動作and simple past tense for the second action第二動作. Also it is used in reported speech. 亦會用在報告式語法

Example:

The car had arrived before you came. 你來之前架車已經到咗。 After I had dinner, I watched television. 我食完飯之後睇咗電視。
